Navigating the shift from the structured military environment to the more fluid world of the civilian (NGO’s & private sector) workforce can be a challenge faced by current & former ADF personnel & Veterans. ℹ️ Here are 7 tips & strategies for leveraging a successful change:

1. ADF/ Veterans’ Programmes & Resources: Tapping into organisations offering programmes designed specifically to help veterans transition to civilian careers, providing valuable training, mentorship & job placement assistance.
2. Leveraging Military Experience: Leadership, teamwork, problem-solving & project management are highly valued in civilian roles. Career counsellers can assist with converting your military experience into skills, language & terminology that appeals to civilian employers.
3. Expanding Your Network: Networking with other veterans who have successfully transitioned can be helpful as well as building a civilian network. Attending industry events, joining professional organisations & leveraging platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals can build your professional network & get you noticed by potential employers. Joining groups via social media platforms like Facebook, Eventbrite & Meetup offer virtual & in-person activities, gatherings & events for people & communities with similar interests, hobbies, & professions. Keeping up to date with learning programmes, seminars, webinars & events organised by Libraries & Councils can also provide opportunities to learn new skills, network & make new connections. Put yourself out there!
4. Continuous Learning: Undertaking further education or certifications relevant to your desired field can help bridge the gap between military & civilian roles & show potential employers your commitment to adapting your skills & experience to a new industry. You can also consider developing your learning & expanding your network via Community Colleges, TAFE & Universities, either in-person or online. You can also conduct self-directed learning with various resources & online videos to give you that extra edge. You will be spoilt for choice!
5. Resume & Cover Letter customising: Resume writing services & other online tools can assist you with tailoring your cover letter & resume for job applications using civilian friendly language, highlighting quantifiable achievements in non-military specific terminology, with relatable skills, experience & qualifications. Apply for positions, even if you don’t meet all of the criteria (apply for many!) as some employers’ rate attitude more than meeting most or all of the criteria as some job duties can be trained whereas work ethic & team fit is critical.
6. Practicing Interview Skills: Prepare for interviews by practicing how to discuss your military background in a way that aligns with the job you’re applying for. Role-playing interviews with career coaches or mentors (or privately!) can help you articulate your experiences effectively. Researching Industries, Company websites, position descriptions, online employee reviews etc. will help you understand each Company’s unique culture.
7. Seek Mentorship: Mentors with experience in your field of interest can provide invaluable guidance & support as mentors can offer insights into industry-specific practices & help you navigate the job search process effectively. Developing & nurturing connections with Community Groups with similar interests, backgrounds & experience can also help you throughout your journey.

🌟Perseverance & adaptability developed in the military are strong assets in the civilian workforce & by embracing the journey, you’ll find the skills & experience from your military career can open doors for new & rewarding opportunities!
